iText's developers have been proponents of open-source software since the project was founded in 2000. Licensing under the AGPL license makes it easy to try out and run iText at no cost and to make any customizations you want.

For my use-case, I had pre-built PDFs with AcroForms. With iText, it’s quite easy to fill in the fields in the AcroForm and save a copy. All in a few lines of code. If you have to create/edit PDFs in your Java application, iText is the best thing out there.

iText is excellent if you have to pump out huge reports of thousands of pages, it does scale excellently. (I once used it to concatenate thousands of pdf pages into a huge compound document, and it blew the [vendor name] tools against the wall, literally, speedwise).
